When I produced, wrote, and directed a half-hour special in 2015 on the ‘Choking the Planet: The Problem with Plastics’ for Al Jazeera America, one of the things I learned was Europe makes the producing corporations pay a significant portion toward consumer recycling services. We’ve tried that in the US and The Kochtopus Lobbyist Brigade has forced environmentalists to retreat. Same with tech. Many countries in Europe are way ahead of us in tech and media literacy, because the tech companies help foot the bill for educational programs.
So now is our chance to learn some media literacy.
I am honored that Tamar Kintsurashvili is returning to Bette Dangerous on Tuesday. We are dedicating our weekly Happy Hour to a media literacy training workshop led by Tamar, who is the Executive Director of Georgia’s Media Development Foundation.
She herself is the target of terror campaigns led by pro-Russian operatives in her country, as she defends citizens against information warfare and defends media NGOs in her home country from being forced to register as foreign agents.
THIS EVENT IS FREE TO ALL PAID MEMBERS, but if you are able to make a donation, it really helps do this work. Thank you to all who have already donated!
MEDIA LITERACY ADVANCE TRAINING — Practice Links!
Here are links from Tamar to her group’s media literacy web-page, with games where you can test your media literacy in advance of Tuesday. Let me know how you do.
Also, check out Operation Infection — see how well you understand Russian propaganda:
She also shared her fact-checking on Tucker Carlson’s statement regarding the war in Ukraine (you may have to click on Eng from home page):
And here is more information on how Carlson’s statement was amplified in different countries — available in this report from on 67:
As noted in that report:
The monitoring revealed one case related to the anti-liberal discourse, which was disseminated in Georgia, Russia, Belarus and other post-Soviet countries in a coordinated manner and through various communication channels in relation to the war in Ukraine.146 The purpose of the instance was to divert attention from the topic of war to other sensitive issues such as identity. In addition to distracting attention (from Russia’s responsibility to the responsibility of the US), the method of distortion was also used to change the prevalent narrative around Russia’s intervention in Ukraine with the one about the religious war between the US and Russia.
The mentioned incident includes various elements (manipulation, disinformation) and phases (creation-interpretation, dissemination, localization) of informational disorder:
1. Initial Statement: US Congressman Jamie Raskin made a statement148 in which he called Russia “the world center of hatred” due to violations of fundamental human rights (anti-feminist, anti-gay, anti-trans) and underscored the need to support Ukraine;
2. Manipulative Interpretation: Fox News host Tucker Carlson interpreted the congressman’s words in a manipulative way and attributed the words to Jamie Raskin as if he was demanding the destruction of Russia at any cost because of its Orthodoxy: “Russia is an Orthodox country with traditional values, and for that reason, it must be destroyed.”
Here she is in Ep97 of RadPod, describing how Georgia is defending democracy:
More about Tamar here:
I know it will be a riveting hour, and I’m looking forward to learning with you.
Founding Members: I look forward to seeing you today at 4 pm Pacific for our event with Sian Norris, details below:
