It’s comforting to know how many incredible Bette members throughout the world care so much about what happens in America. That is why I disrupted the original format of our weekly Tuesday Happy Hour to bring experts from Ukraine, Italy, Vienna, Georgia, UK, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and even former citizens of Russia to help us navigate our way through the Great Information War. I have invited US-based bestselling authors, philosophers, award-winning filmmakers, democracy coaches, and as many great minds as I can book for an hour to help us in this challenging time.
As Monique Camarra always reminds us, the vote in November is a vote against global authoritarianism. We have an opportunity to not just vote for Democratic leadership, but to also rebuke fascism.
Although the original intention for our weekly Happy Hour was to offer an hour to check in on how everyone is mentally holding up during the Great Information War, and what tools each of you can share — music, film, art, activism, campaigning, hobbies, etc — I broadened it to bring in guests because we have so little time to get this right.
Most of us never expected the United States would be invaded through modern warfare techniques and that US politicians would be assets of the invaders. But here we are.
Mexico Update with Homar Paez
So tomorrow my plan is to split the hour — the first half of the hour we’ll hear from voting rights activist and reporter Homar Paez, who has been updating me on the worrisome political events unfolding in Mexico and why it matters for the US. Not only was Putin just invited to Mexico to attend the new president’s inauguration, but recent moves toward judicial “reform” echo the corruption of our highest courts under Trump. Paez is concerned that Mexico just saw its last free election. Here he is on RadPod explaining how the June election unfolded:
Wellness Checkin for Global Newsies
For the second half of the hour we will offer an opportunity for whoever wants to check in on how they’re doing. As many of you know, I found last week challenging, I’d grown unaccustomed to joy, and I’d also grown used to anything good that occurs in the US in the last eight years to be savaged by the Ugly Right and a parroting media rich with stenographers.
But thanks to great podcast partners, a wonderful community, and art and music and cinema, I rebounded quickly.
Can’t wait to share my latest Byline report with you asap.
We have reasons to believe.
