Great article. The problem (speaking here as a retired psychiatrist) is that we have so many damaged people in this country, people damaged by those who raised them. These people are not likely to ever be fixed in any meaningful way. More are being produced all the time. The "happy" people that. Dorothy Thompson refers to in her article are similarly products of their upbringing. It's harder to raise a happy person than a humiliated, embittered one, unfortunately, and parents of happy offspring tend to have fewer children on the whole.

What caught me in this article is something I have been noticing for quite some time, and that is Thompson's reference to "a lost generation" that is vulnerable to Nazism because they have not been alive during a major war. Our young people have not grown up with a close history of the big wars and their horrors. Some participated in the Vietnam war or watched it, but that generation is no longer young. The Afghan war was out of sight for the most part and barely touched the lives of people back home. I have listened to stories about the boredom of youth, about their sense of not having opportunities those before them had had. Many young men cannot find brides, not to speak of those who have made a "club" out of still being virgins in their twenties. Are they ripe for becoming Nazis?

Donald Trump is an authoritarian leader, fascistic and sympathetic to dictators. This was known before the election, yet males over females voted him into the presidency for a second term. Trump has created a new war - with Iran. A majority of people do not want this war. That is a good sign. We have yet to see how the freedom of our election comes out. We have yet to see what would happen if Trump should die and Vance take over, considering the way Vance is analyzed in this article (and his closeness to Peter Thiel). Some think it would be a relief, but are their hopes about Vance only false hopes that he would better align us with freedom?
