Author’s note: Disinformation analyst Dietmar Pichler is a core member of Bette Dangerous, bringing us breaking news on the Great Propaganda Wars, and exposing global active measures run by Russia and author autocratic nations. It is my pleasure to invite you to acknowledge International Disinformation Awareness Day, an event he founded on this day four years ago. Those of you in the United States may want to take the opportunity to gently inform friends and family around the Thanksgiving table that the information space is polluted with operatives targeting citizens of democratic nations by any memes necessary. The aim is to steal our trust, our agency, and our democracies. Below, are some words from Dietmar on this special day.—hsc
International Disinformation Awareness Day
By Dietmar Pichler
In 2021, right during the pandemic, I proclaimed November 27th the first “International Disinformation Awareness Day”. I was supported by my Ukrainian friend Anna Pattermann, a champion for democracy who endorsed my idea.
Back then, my motivation was not only the widespread disinformation during the pandemic, the growing anti-science movement, the threats to our environment and economy, but also foreign interference in the political sphere. Autocratic regimes like Russia, supported by local actors from the political extremes, aim to destabilize us via foreign interference campaigns, which are a threat to our democracy, freedom and human rights. I want to dedicate this day also to all people who dedicate their profession, expertise and passion to fight this fundamental threat to our existence.—Dietmar Pichler for Better Dangerous, November 27, 2025
As Dietmar told me: “We can see that an international autocratic information front is forming, supported by local actors, extremists, agents of influence or so called useful idiots, some even from the academic sphere, who parrot the dictators talking points.”
By proclaiming a day to raise awareness, he is also celebrating the work of “experts, journalists and volunteers who put a lot of effort into tackling this issue despite all the resistance and obstacles.”
He believes that “protecting our information space is not only a task for institutions but a responsibility shared by all of us. Every citizen plays a role in building resilience against manipulation and propaganda, no matter if it is overt or subtle.”
Dietmar Pichler is an advisor on strategic communication against foreign interference, founder of the Disinfo Resilience Network, and an editor at Inved.eu.
