The fight is global, and the young protestors in Georgia are much like the young protestors in Serbia — Gen Z or ‘Zoomers’ in search of better leadership that doesn’t include strongmen rule and the denial of basic human rights. In this translated article, one of today’s guests speaks about the decency that young people in Belgrade are demanding.

Please join us today at 9 am Pacific time/noon Eastern, as war correspondent Zarina Zabrisky offers us updates from Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, and Germany. We will also be joined by Serbian history professor Slobodan Markovich from the University of Belgrade. Plus, we will hear from additional guests from the US and Europe.

Zabrisky should be familiar to Bette members: she is an American correspondent, who was born in the Soviet Union and has been reporting from Ukraine since 2022. She is also an author and poet and has appeared on these pages dozens of times and often joins us in the squares. I do urge you to check out my friend Greg Olear’s recent interview with her, along with Greg’s beautiful poem.

Markovich is new to our community, and came highly recommended from our friend Marci Shore. Along with teaching at Belgrade University in the Political Science department, he is also the Head of the Centre for British Studies in Belgrade. His deals with British-Balkan relations and relations between Europe and Serbia in the last two centuries, with issues of democratisation of South-East Europe, history of European pessimism, and with psychoanalytic anthropology. He is the head of the project Cultural Transfer Europe-Serbia from the 19th to the 21st Centuries. In 2023, he was Krzysztof Michalski Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna. Since 2024 he has been a member of the Academy of Europe – Academia Europaea.

Our Happy Hours began more than two years ago as an ironically named weekly wellness checkin for global newsies and has evolved to include important information from around the world. I am very grateful to those of you who show up week after week.

Please check your time zones, as we are now reaching people in 81 countries, to sync with our 9 am Pacific time zone start today.
