Guest Post: Trump’s DOJ — Retribution Feast Or Can’t Indict a Ham Sandwich?

A major theme of Trump’s last presidential campaign was Revenge, as he put it, “I’m your retribution!”
Notable political opponents such as past FBI Director Comey, past NY State AG Letitia James and other pesty folks on the other side e.g. Adam Schiff, Eric Swalwell, et al., were targeted by Trump with his DOJ to exact some satisfying revenge after The Trumpster spent a frustrating year or two on the wrong side of multiple indictments, convictions and expensive legal judgments, to say nothing about the many biting media headlines that politicized and trumpeted to no end “the Donald’s” setbacks.
But Trump’s DOJ struck out twice in failing to obtain a True Bill from two separate GJ’s in Northern Virginia regarding attempts to indict Leticia James for mortgage fraud. James Comey’s indictment was thrown out because the U.S. Attorney requesting the GJ indictment was not legally appointed. Whoopsie!
Should the DOJ finally obtain indictments against Comey and James that they can take to court, they will likely be dismissed on grounds of vindictive/selective prosecution.
It is also hard to see how the Trumpster could get his DOJ to indict anyone for committing Mortgage Fraud given “The Donald” himself obtained mortgages on two residences simultaneously, falsely claiming each was a primary residence when they were not! Additionally, several of Trump’s Cabinet officials have allegedly done the same thing.
Trump and his DOJ clearly have a big appetite to exact legal revenge on Trump’s perceived potential opponents.
But they are unable to cook up a feast of legitimate indictments as clearly their legal impotence leaves them unable to even indict a ham sandwich, however hungry for revenge they all may be.—Martin Sheil, Supervisory Special Agent, IRS, Criminal Investigations, retired; originally published at Marty’s substack.
