RadPod and Bette became book clubs some time ago, and that is a wonderful thing. When author Anne Nelson was asked at the beginning of the year at a Bette Happy Hour — when we were staying in Palm Springs together for the world premiere of Bad Faith — what would be the best thing people could do for pro-democracy efforts, she said to form book clubs and form them fast.
At Bette and RadPod, we were ahead of the game — we have been interviewing the greatest historians, philosophers, war correspondents, and investigative minds of our time. On these pages, I have brought you interviews with Ruth Ben-Ghiat, Jason Stanley, Craig Unger, Nancy MacLean, Anne Nelson, to name a few, as well as important excerpts from the work of Timothy Snyder, and most recently Bella Fromm, and Dorothy Thompson.
When I wrote the report Who Goes Nazi?, I had just finished interviewing Gareth Gore for RadPod. The financial journalist had released his bombshell book, Opus: The Cult of Dark Money, Human Trafficking, and Right-Wing Conspiracy inside the Catholic Church.
Have a listen:
Admittedly, I was grappling with the double whammy of a debate that normalized and downplayed the serious threats we are facing, while taking in what I had learned from Gore’s book and interview: how this fringe cult within the Catholic church has infected our country at the highest levels in its lust for power, while being linked to the trafficking of young girls.
To be sure, I understand the fight ahead, and how far it extends beyond November.
So what I always try to do for my paying members is offer you access to the great minds who inform my work.
So please mark your calendars for the following:
HAPPY HOUR: Tuesday, October 8, noon Pacific — retired IRS criminal investigator Martin Sheil walks us through Jack Smith’s latest unsealed court filing. Sheil’s blood is still boiling from reading it last night.
FOUNDER’S DAY: Sunday, October 13, 11 am Pacific — Gareth Gore joins us for a Q & A about his book, Opus. Please take the time to listen to RadPod’s interview with him in advance.
SPEAKEASY: Sunday, October 13, 4 pm Pacific — Craig Unger returns to discuss his latest book, Den of Spies, which is available now, and which features many of the same characters who are trying to overthrow democracy again.
As always, I do hope you purchase their books in advance. They give of their time, and we can give back by supporting their very important work.
I will send out registration links in advance for each event.
All levels of Bette membership are invited to attend the Happy Hour and Speakeasy events, and if you would like to attend our monthly Founder’s Day events, please upgrade your membership to support me at the premium level.
Unlike the people I investigate, I am not funded by billionaires and Kremlin bag men. I rely on your memberships and donations as I do this work, which I believe adds value to our understanding of the threats we face.
Thank you as always for your support.
