Thank you to everyone who attended Bette’s Happy Hour on Tuesday to meet the commander of the Georgian National Legion, Ukraine — Mamuka Mamulashvili. What an inspiring conversation. I look forward to sharing a print version of our interview with this community.
I am equally excited about our next guest, as I bring back our Sunday Speakeasy, a periodic community event featuring the best pro-democracy minds.
During a dinner gathering at the Byline Festival this past July, I met the co-founder of Open Democracy, Anthony Barnett, who will join us at 11 am Pacific, this coming Sunday, September 28.
The Happy Hour and Speakeasy events are open to all levels of paid membership, and for those who support me at the highest level — Founding Member — we have periodic Founder’s Day special events. Although I slowed down on events in recent months, as I observed too much noise and not enough signal, I will continue bringing our community the most inspiring minds and warriors in this fight of our lives.
Here is a briefing on our guest:
Anthony Barnett, co-founder of Open Democracy, Sunday, September 28, 11 am Pacific:
Anthony Barnett is a leading organiser for democracy in Britain and a political writer and essayist - with books on the Falklands war, Gorbachev and the Soviet Union, the UK’s monarchy, replacing the House of Lords with citizens assemblies, Brexit, Trump and how to defeat him. From 1988 to 1995, he was the first director of Charter 88 the influential campaign for a modern democracy in Britain, and in 2001 co-founded openDemocracy and became its first Editor. He writes the monthly ‘Notes on Now’ for Byline Times. He made the short film US Progressives on a Knife Edge in 2022.
A note for new members: the Happy Hour began two and a half years ago, when I noticed many Bette members in despair. I thought a weekly wellness checkin for global newsies was in order, and it evolved into a session where guests offer news from around the world. The title was always meant to be ironic, but I know I feel better when our community comes together. The Speakeasy and Founder’s Day events were added to bring great minds together to continue inspiring the labor of demoracy.
