Bette members: please join our Tuesday Happy Hour on New Year’s Eve at 9 am for some tea and empathy, as we fill a cup of kindness for the sake of auld lang syne.
We know the work ahead, but we also know we have to have a happy life, and for me, spending time with you brings me great joy. Christmas Eve’s Happy Hour was memorable and beautiful, as we shared stories of love among the ruins and were joined by brave patriots protesting in the streets of NYC.
New members: you will always find the event registration links by scrolling to the very bottom of invitation posts.
Just a few more quick bits:
Those of you who have been with me from the beginning know that I recharge and refresh on the sun and the moon and the stars.
So on my desert holiday, I got up every morning to greet the sunrise in the tradition of the Navajo, which I learned while traveling through Navajoland on a trip to Monument Valley.
As instructed, I brought my sage and smudge kit, and various feathers I acquired along the way, and greeted the glowing orb with gratitude and connection. I have learned to give gratitude to the earth, to my ancestors — which I just learned includes the animals of earth — and to the sun, the sky, always the birds, and the air and whatever I wish to be thankful for… and love and love and love — I am terribly grateful for love.
In my gratitude, I am reminded that I am connected and that connection feels so good — connected to the earth and grateful for the earth.
We are living in a time of empathy thieves, extractors who extract, and I share my recharge with you, because for me, it is healing and cleansing to take a break from the sturm und drang.
It’s been long eight years, and moments of natural beauty are restorative.
As my friend Pekka says, step away from the war for a few days for self-care. The war will be there when you return.
Over the break, I checked in on the virtual battlefield of Twitter, and there I saw arsonists pouring gasoline on fire and grave despair and fear. I also saw kayfabe, bread and circus, and distraction.
I am focusing on the historic books I read to bring you the most vital information. I can’t wait to share my Karen Dawisha report with you on Putin’s Kleptocracy. Here’s a small preview:
As our friend Dr. Marci Shore told us, history doesn’t tell us what is going to happen, but it does offer suggestions. I will continue focusing on deeper scholarship, which I believe is more meaningful than reacting daily to the Bullshit of the Unloved.
Lastly, please do check out HiFi’s amazing work on RadPod’s latest Big Clips extravaganza. Our little podcast has always boxed above its weight, and the holiday compilation of the year in review is stellar and important.
I know that the secret to America’s troubles lies in Ukraine defeating Russia, and RadPod’s latest offers expert evidence.
And for those looking to be of service as we enter the new year, here is an excerpt of my latest Hot Type column in Byline, which offers solid and urgent messaging on what Joe Biden could still do in this moment of historic peril. Join me in applying pressure:
America, you are not alone.
Bette community, you are not alone.
See you in the squares on NYE.
In solidarity, reality, truth, and unity,
Heidi xo
