Sunday, Nov. 24, 11 am PT — Bette’s Speakeasy with Maksym Eristavi, author of Russian Colonialism 101; and just added to the event is Lifeline Ukraine founder Paul Niland, who will be joining us from Kyiv to help us regulate our mental health during times of crisis (open to all paid members)
Tuesday, Nov. 26, Noon PT — Bette’s ‘Parenting with Pride’ Happy Hour event. Learn from an Equality Florida activist how to defend and defeat the uptick in hate directed at gay youth. Bring your children to this zoom so we can all learn together. (All paid members invited)
Sunday, Dec. 1, 11 am PT — Founder’s Day with Keir Giles, author of Russia’s War On Everybody, on his new book, Who Will Defend Europe? To join our Founder’s Day events, please upgrade your membership to the premium level — you can set your own price above a full annual membership.
“Freedom never comes for free, and as long as we keep fighting for it — in our own personal ways — that decreases the price we have to pay for it. Because if we stop doing that, we eventually lose it, and then getting back will be almost impossible or will require tremendous sacrifice.”—Maksym Eristavi on RadPod
BETTTE’S SPEAKEASY WITH MAKSYM ERISTAVI + PAUL NILAND
Thank you so much to all new and renewing members. As a reader-funded journalist in a time of grave peril, your support reaffirms my commitment and devotion to the defense of truth.
With many of our guests zooming in from war zones, I appreciate everyone’s flexibility when events are occasionally rescheduled. Last Sunday’s Speakeasy was postponed due to Makysm feeling lousy, and now we are rescheduling with a double-feature!
Currently, we have two guests booked for our Sunday Speakeasy at 11 am Pacific/2 pm Eastern: Maksym Eristavi, a Ukrainian reporter and the author of the book, Russian Colonialism 101. We will also be joined by one of Bette’s frequent guests, Paul Niland, a Kyiv-based reporter who founded Ukraine’s first suicide hotline, Lifeline Ukraine. I asked Paul to join us, because as I have been studying the history of fascists countries, I am aware that mental health support and community support is paramount.
Below are details and bios on both our guests:
Maksym Eristavi of Russian Colonialism 101
Maksym Eristavi, author of Russian Colonialism 101, will explain how with America under occupation by foreign oligarchs, solidarity is required to resist the culture of abuse that occurs in occupied nations.
If you are not yet a member, you can watch RadPod’s interview with Maksym below for free:
As Maksym told RadPod:
“In studying disinformation and imperial myths, one of the biggest myths that separates the free world and the empires is the focus on what one person can do. The empire always tells you that one person doesn’t matter… when in fact, when you look at Ukraine, and you see that unlikely Resistance against all odds, facing the bleakest prospects, has been going on for over three years, exactly just because of this extraordinary Resistance by ordinary people.”
Paul Niland with Lifeline Ukraine
The second part of our hour will be dedicated to helping manage mental health during our current crisis and to do that, our friend Paul Niland will be on deck.
More on Paul here:
Lifeline Urkaine founder Paul Niland was born in Dublin, Ireland, and has lived in Kyiv for more than two decades. He became a reporter after the initial invasion of Ukraine a decade ago, when Russia tried to portray Ukrainians as nazis — poisoning reality. Niland founded the national suicide hotline to help prevent veteran suicides after Russia’s first invasion. And now, LifelineUkraine.com serves the entire country.
Here is a short clip from his Twitter timeline from May, which gives a brief background on their work:
Always look for the helpers.
Thank you to everyone who supports my work, and the work of many vital pro-democracy voices in this global fight for truth and humanity.
