Welcome to new members! A heartfelt thank you to all renewing members, as well. My work is entirely reader-funded and your memberships and donations support me as I aim to get in front of the daily reaction cycle and into the more thoughtful work of historic analysis.
If you have a moment, please read my debut column Hot Type in Byline Supplement from today. Here is an excerpt:
And please share the report with your networks. Like, subscribe, all the things.
Hot Type is a synthesis of all the work I’ve been doing lately to bring hard facts and historic analysis together.
And speaking of hard facts and history, I had such a great time with Dietmar Pichler and Monique Camarra at Bette’s Happy Hour last Tuesday, I asked them both to come back and would you believe it?! They said yes! How lucky we are to have such terrific global resources to help inform us.
Bette’s Happy Hour with Dietmar and Monique, October 1, Tuesday, Noon Pacific — Elections, Sanctions, Law, and Investigations
Dietmar and Monique will be updating us on Austria’s recent elections, Meloni’s Musk encounter, the latest investigations into Russia’s covert influence activities and more.
“The sanctions against Russia prevent Western business relations with certain autocratic states, especially Russia, but the propaganda relations with these countries are neither investigated nor sanctioned.”—Dietmar Pichler for Bette Dangerous
“The good news is that Russia isn’t actually doing so well and will continue to degrade. Most of the information ops right now are simply in place to buy time or distract. Notice how nothing is coming out about Kursk and the failure of the RU forces to get the Ukrainians out of there? All we see on our feeds is US bashing, calls for peace, WW3, anything but how the Russian Central Bank is about to raise interest rates to 25%. They’re currently at 19%. Last year they were at 13%.
“But everything boils down to grand strategy, theatre strategy, and the ways and means to execute them to achieve reasonable success. You need coordination at the top, vision, leadership.”—Monique Camarra for Bette Dangerous
More on Dietmar and Monique here:
Dietmar Pichler is a Vienna-based disinformation researcher, media literacy educator, and the founder of Disinfo Resilience Network. Please have a listen to RadPod’s interview with Dietmar here. Based in Italy, geopolitical analyst Monique Camarra is a frequent Happy Hour guest and most of you already know her from her excellent Eurofile reports, where she pulls together the most critical news and updates about Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as news breaking from Europe. She is also the co-host of the Kremlin File podcast, along with Olga Lautman.
Happy Hours are open to all levels of membership, and we look forward to meeting new members!
I am trying to carve out some time to catch up on sending you recent Speakeasy and Happy Hour interview recordings, and, God willin’ and the creek don’t rise, I should be able to get to that this week, likely all in one post, so be on the look out for it. The audio recordings will include interviews with Martin Sheil, Greg Palast, Alex Alvarova, and Dietmar and Monique.
Thank you everyone for your support of my work, and thank you to each of you helping grow this vibrant, pro-democracy network.
