Bette’s Gratitude Happy Hour
When: Tuesday, November 25, 11 am Pacific; 2 pm Eastern
Open to all levels of paid membership, Bette members are invited to our Tuesday Happy Hour, November 25, 11 am Pacific, 2 pm Eastern, where our focus will be on gratitude and mindfulness.
A big thank you to everyone who attended yesterday’s Speakeasy with Tetiana Boriak, a Ukrainian historian who educated us on the Holodomor. For those who missed it, I will have a print report summary.
Last night, I watched Mr. Jones — a film written by the brilliant Bette member Andrea Chalupa — about the brave, Welsh journalist Gareth Jones who snuck his way into Ukraine during the man-made famine and documented what he saw. I urge you to watch it, and share with your networks.
I recall asking Fabio Parasecoli, the author of Gastronativism, to describe the food of fascism, and his response: “Hunger.”
So in difficult times, let’s take a few minutes to simple give thanks for what we have, the communities that support us, and how we can better serve those who are struggling.
I am often reminded of our recent chat with disinformation analysts Deitmar Pichler and Monique Camarra on how just the act of prioritizing loyalty to your communities — a commitment to togetherness — is a way to defy propaganda attacks. And as I learned from this Swedish woman who attended the Women’s March in Washington DC in 2017, always lift up the weakest member of your society.
As Camarra taught us last week at her birthday party, Moldova beat Russia in the last election with the simple concept of unity.
A note for new members: the Happy Hour began about three years ago, when I noticed many Bette members in despair. I thought a weekly wellness checkin for newsies was in order, and it evolved into a session where global guests offer news from around the world. The title was always meant to be ironic, but I know I feel better when our community comes together.
Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to those of you who are renewing your memberships and are new to the Bette community. Your support means everything to me. It’s been a devastating time to be a member of independent media, and I am so grateful for your continued support. If you would like to upgrade your membership, please use the coupon in this post:
