When gratitude feels like too small a word. This is one of those moments.
Last night, I reached a milestone — surpassing 500 paid and gifted memberships. I am determined to make it through 2024 as an independent writer — to continue speaking truth to power in defense of democracy — and many of you have carried me. Thank you.
As I was walking the Rose Parade route this morning, the smell of a million roses in the air, I thought of all that I am grateful for — starting with my NYE tradition.
Each New Year’s Eve, I spend the night with a group of friends and at 11 pm, we have a gratitude meeting where guests share about what they are grateful for. One of the guests said ‘gratitude’ was too small a word for what he was feeling, and that’s how I feel for all this community has done for me.
When I shared last year, I had just launched Bette Dangerous — turning down a job at City Hall so I could continue being an independent investigative reporter, which I thought was very necessary in this time of grave deception. I had no idea how I’d survive, and I shared that. Well, here I am. Thank you.
To keep the good vibes flowing in what is undoubtedly going to be a challenging year, looking forward to seeing many of you in the squares for our weekly Happy Hour, where we’ll offer an opportunity to take a minute to share what you’re grateful for. The Happy Hours, which occur at noon or 5 pm PT on Tuesdays, are a wellness checkin for global newsies but we often spend the hour with experts like Martin Sheil updating us on important court cases, or Monique Camarra updating us on the war in Ukraine, or democracy pep talks from David Pepper.
We are truly blessed.
