‘Raging Against the Twitter Machine Will Not Save Our Democracy’
And other things I said on The Thom Hartmann Program
Very grateful for the opportunity to appear on The Thom Hartmann Program yesterday to discuss my latest investigation in Byline Supplement.
It gave me the opportunity to thank Thom for the inspiration. A recent report by him included the measures Poland is taking to seal off its vulnerabilities to active measures, and his report prompted me to look globally to see what other countries were doing to thwart active measures. If you do not have a membership to Byline Supplement and would like to read my full report, please reach out to me directly at bettedangerous/gmail.
As with my previous visit to Thom’s show, I managed to punch a few white nationalists in the metaphorical nose. Have a listen:
“Raging against the Twitter machine will not save our democracy. It’s a great place to meet allies and share information but saving democracy requires labor — we must commit to the labor of democracy.”
We discuss the active measures playbook, and how other countries are having mass protests against right-wing extremism; arresting their coup plotters; expelling religious propagandists; and turning off their Russian-propaganda networks.
There is much we can be doing to go on offense.
Some housekeeping items: just want to make sure new readers have the opportunity to join the Bette Dangerous community at half-off pricing for the first year. The offer ends at midnight tonight.
A few calendar items: Founding Members and OG renewers should have received their invitation to our meeting with Keir Giles this Sunday.
Please note that we have a very special Happy Hour coming up at noon PT on Tuesday, February 13, with Shadow Network author Anne Nelson, who will devote some time to discussing the documentary on Christian nationalism Bad Faith, and will also be discussing the revised edition of her book, Red Orchestra, about the Berlin Underground and the circle of friends who resisted Hitler.
As always when we get a flurry of new members, I want to direct them to some of my recent series and a collection of my favorite reporting from 2023.
I would be grateful if you read and share with your networks.

Lastly, thank you to all of you who congratulated us on our win this week against disgraced Mike Flynn, who is suing my podcast partner Jim Stewartson for $50 million dollars.
I went for a walk last night, listening to Pennywise’s Straight Ahead — my favorite South Bay punk band. For just a moment, I allowed myself to savor the win.
I have learned from David Pepper to take a few moments to celebrate the wins, and then get right back in the trenches. Those we expose regroup after every loss and plot their next evil moves.
This lawfare fight is far from over, but as my friend Andrea said last night, we are kicking some fascist ass.
I’m glad you are here.
