Peak life experience, Heidi. I remember when rap first emerged I thought it was remarkable all these young people had developed poetry for the masses. I never became a rap scholar like you Heidi. My days working in the music business were well behind me.
During that period I attended an LA trade show and a fellow trade show denizen, a young black man selling baby clothes with designs from various religions, befriended me. He and three of his LA buddies drove me all over LA showing me all the clubs and hot spots. I was in my loose-fitting pale yellow Joan Vass dress and the 4 guys were almost young enough to be my sons. They would tell people at club doors they were members of my band. The gatekeepers were too embarrassed not to recognize this band and we always got in and treated like celebs. These were the four funniest guys I've ever met. We laughed so hard, our faces wore out. That's why I refer to the guys, Jim and Josh, in Heidi's podcast as her band.
That must have been during the Rodney King riots. I remember that time vividly because I was negotiating with a Los Angeles business woman who wanted to buy my company, Archives. When she put in her first offer, I was insulted and told her so. She sent me 2 dozen of the most beautiful roses I'd ever seen. I didn't have the chops to continue negotiations because the truth is I could not stand to part with my company. I'm a poor woman today because of this bad decision.
You have led such a varied life.
As my therapist used to say, “You draw from a wide palette.”
