Reality Killed By a Reality Star
As I escorted my 86-year-old mother to see 84-year-old Tom Jones perform at the Greek Theatre on Monday night, I was gobsmacked by Jones’ song:
Talking Reality Television Blues
First of all, Jones rocks. He likes to rock. And his voice was sublime.
But the lyrics so devastated the Trump Cult, a few MAGA heads got up and left. But thousands of people stood on their feet and cheered as Jones sang:
Then a show called "The Apprentice" came on and pretty soon
An old man with a comb-over had sold us the moon
We stayed tuned in, now here we are
Reality killed by a reality star, I got the talking blues
So midway through watching The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie with my mother — part of our Dame Maggie Smith binge — it occurred to me that the current crop of frontman for the assault on our reality are props for the real villains.
Smith played a Mussolini/Franco loving fascist — a true believer in the strongman mythos — but upon the arrival of television, we get the B actors and D-list celebrities, or the telegenic dope of a son of the oil baron/CIA head.
Democratic candidates so enrage the fascists because they spring from working class roots or are the better, more brilliant half of a much-loved President, or — gasp — a self-made woman of color.
And here’s the thing:
The Putinist GOP knows this — they are assaulting our decency daily, casting aspersions on good people so they can keep radicalizing the party base to not believe their eyes and ears.
And these guys all hate each other.
I had that realization on page 124 of The Gravediggers: The Last Winter of the Weimar Republic, on December 9, 1932, where a room full of functionaries were shaking Hitler’s hand.
“Everyone pledged loyalty to the Fürher of their party. It was a performance of solidarity. Imposed devotion.”

That hit me like lightning — a gift from the ghosts of Bella Fromm and Dorothy Thompson. A clear explanation of that creepy image of Mitt Romney having dinner with Trump on November 28, 2016.
They hate each other. It’s about power.
Many are compromised, and we can exploit that. Their loathing of each other is why evil people always turn inward and devour each other.
And what did Timothy Snyder just teach us?
“Freedom is not just an absence of evil but a presence of good.”
We have to be the good that refuses to accept a fascist America. We have to go back to metaphorically punching Nazis, and now that we know their bonds aren’t so tight, I feel like we can do a great job of wedging in the next few weeks.
We have to reject all the lies and trickery of these performative functionaries.
What we are witnessing is “imposed devotion” — a kissing of the ring, a performance of solidarity, because their allegiances to each other and to truth are growing weaker.
Elon Musk stunting for Trump was just gross.

What did JD Vance and Lindsey Graham and every other Republican schmuck say about Donald Trump before they got in line to feign imposed devotion? Nothing nice.
JD Vance was created from whole cloth by Peter Thiel, American Monster No. 13.
Even his NGO to help with addiction was just a front for his political aspirations, according to his Senate opponent Tim Ryan, who documented evidence that no one was helped except the administrators, who made millions.
The point is, we are looking at a lot of straw men and useful idiots, who are propped up to be the congenial face of fascism.
In reading back my year’s worth of investigations in my American Monster series, I am shocked that the only one behind bars is Steve Bannon. This network of US criminals accelerating global fascism is literally using Trump and Vance to try to coup our country… again. Some of these criminals have repeatedly staged shock events to ensure GOP victories for decades.

“You put a reasonable face to right-wing populism,” he said, “you get elected.”
We need to see these people as the useful idiots they are.
Trump is a reality star who killed reality.
JD Vance is a compromised tool of billionaires aligned with Putin.
They all know each other’s secrets — it’s their leverage.
Back in the real world, the United States is multi-racial democracy in the process of succeeding. Democrats have been crushing it since Dobbs.
Don’t let reality get destroyed by the “pretty” face of fascism.
