For my latest Hot Type column in the Byline Times, I set out to write a definitive account of every attack by the Trump regime on the US midterm elections. I quickly realized it would require a book to document each sinister plot, so I laid out the most critical attacks. I also included comments from a recent Jason Stanley interview directing people toward what they can do collectively to stop them. The headline is a direct quote from Stanley, the author of How Fascism Works and the Front Left substack.

In my lede, I wrote:
Listening to a recent Jason Stanley interview, he sounded like a sports announcer to the apocalypse.
“They’ve been taking over the military! They’ve been attacking the press! They’re toppling the universities! They’re using the courts to give draconian sentences to ICE protesters. They’re creating a private army. They’re doing everything! They’re doing all the things that if I were advising an authoritarian to do, if those were my values, I would advise. And so yes, they will try to use the military… but everyone’s got to stop them!”
And that’s exactly right.
I also included insightful commentary from Keir Giles upcoming book, American Overthrow. Chapter 11 is titled “Elections, Or Not” and in re-reviewing it, I noticed that I’d highlighted the entire chapter, presenting serious difficulty as I tried to narrow down which quotes to pluck out to be most useful to Byline’s readership.
I also included comments from political philosopher Dr. Michael MacKay, who told me:
“The main hope for Americans is that the Trump regime is incompetent and corrupt. But they should not count on that. Citizens have to organize and unite and vote out the treason faction (the Republican Party) at every level. Votes may be stolen from them and fascism may prevail, but Americans have to fight every step of the way and never give up.”
Never giving up, being a Bette Dangerous mantra.
I’m proud of how I ended the column. Here’s a tease:
Trump, who has made restricting the ability to vote by mail a top priority of his administration, wrote in a 2025 post:
“I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS… We are now the only Country in the World that uses Mail-In Voting. All others gave it up because of the MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD ENCOUNTERED… Democrats are virtually Unelectable without using this completely disproven Mail-In SCAM… I, AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, WILL FIGHT LIKE HELL TO BRING HONESTY AND INTEGRITY BACK TO OUR ELECTIONS. THE MAIL-IN BALLOT HOAX..MUST END NOW!!!!”
This August, Trump voted by mail.
Trump, of course, is the real ‘mail-in fraud.’
