We Are Family — A Celebration of Unity
Open to all levels of paid membership, Bette members are invited to our Tuesday Happy Hour, November 18, Noon Pacific, 3 pm Eastern, where we will be celebrating the birthday of our frequent co-host, EuroFile’s Monique Camarra, while she continues to educate us on information warfare and the importance of unity.
A big thank you to everyone who attended our recent Speakeasy with Tetiana Boriak, a Ukrainian historian who educated us on a century of Russia’s mental war against the world. I will have that print report this week, as well as our Q&A with Marci Shore from our recent Halloween Happy Hour. I am incredibly grateful to our guests as I believe we are fast becoming the best informed community on information warfare techniques, how to recognize them, and form defenses.
This Tuesday, November 18, at noon Pacific, please join me in celebrating the birthday of Monique Camarra. This work is intensive and often distressing, but we meet so many wonderful, brave, and talented people along the way, and those of you who attend our community events, already know how cool Monique is — we have learned so much from her.
Tuesday, she will be updating us on the following:
Evolution of propaganda/info warfare over 3 years- what has changed and what we need to prepare for;
Brief brief update on the front in Ukraine;
What we can learn from the Moldovan elections, a theme we are continuing to mine.
Monique recently attended a briefing in Vienna on Moldova, and here is her summary — a true tribute to the strength of unity:
“The main takeaway from the Moldovan debriefing in Vienna on their latest election was one concept and necessity that encapsulates everything else: unity. What I think we’ve learned over the past nine years (at least) is that it’s much harder to keep united when faced with organised attacks from either foreign malign actors and/or their fellow travellers at home. Their strategy is simple and effective: keep Americans disunited and bickering amongst themselves. Something that is also effective in Europe. What I also learned is that it takes a tremendous amount of work on our behalf and that of our institutions to counter malign influence operations and other grey zone warfare activity, well-worth it given that the stakes are sky-high. Moldovans realised it was an existential threat to their whole lives and livelihoods. I think we need to start thinking in these terms, and take what one Moldovan attaché working in Estonia said from the heart: “In times like these, clarity, courage and conviction are not choices, they are obligations.”—Monique Camarra for Bette Dangerous
Reading her words, I am reminded of our recent chat with disinformation analyst Deitmar Pichler and Monique on how just the act of prioritizing loyalty to your communities — a commitment to togetherness — is a way to defy propaganda attacks. Always lift up the weakest member of your society — don’t allow vilification of ‘other’ to take root. Always prioritize empathy. As you will learn from our interview with Tetiana Boriak, Russia uses everything as a weapon — history, culture, the arts, sports, music, religion, and of course, its military — to try to invade the minds of people in democratic nations. Rather than falling prey to their divisive mental war, stay united and defend anyone being othered.
A note for new members: the Happy Hour began two and a half years ago, when I noticed many Bette members in despair. I thought a weekly wellness checkin for newsies was in order, and it evolved into a session where global guests offer news from around the world. The title was always meant to be ironic, but I know I feel better when our community comes together.
Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to those of you who are renewing your memberships and are new to the Bette community. Your support means everything to me. It’s been a devastating time to be a member of independent media, and I am so grateful for your continued support.
