BYLINE SUPPLEMENT — A Q & A with Anne Nelson on Cynical Plots and the Power of Resistance
My latest in Byline Supplement is a Q & A with author and journalist Anne Nelson, in advance of Byline’s News Meeting featuring Nelson on her work in Bad Faith, Shadow Network, and Red Orchestra

I received a text from David Pepper yesterday, as I was writing my latest report for Byline Supplement. He had a simple question: ‘How are you??’ As a reporter, I am used to people rarely asking how I am doing. I’m the one asking the questions, and he happened to catch me at a moment when I was feeling particularly emo.
I had just gotten to the part in my interview with Anne Nelson where she quoted a member of the Berlin Resistance against Hitler, Greta Kuckhoff, who said:
“We did what we could, and a lot of us gave our lives for it. And if there had only been a couple 100,000 more Germans out of our millions who did the same, we could have stopped Hitler, it wouldn't have taken that much more.”
I told Pepper we need more people doing the work to prevent the authoritarian capture in America, and he agreed.
I was also feeling emo because Nelson told me how the Berlin Resistance was filled with women — educated professionals — who recognized the evils of Hitler, and did not like the Nazis trying to send women back to the trad wife role. And by now if you don’t hear history echoing thunderously, I don’t know what to say. As a German-American, I also felt tremendous comfort knowing there were women who felt like me and took action.
Please read my Q & A with Nelson that dropped this morning in Byline Supplement — it is so important. The report links to all her work and it is all very vital in this moment.
If you are already a supporter of Byline, please plan to join our monthly news meeting with her on Feb. 13, 9 am PT. Nelson will also be joining the Bette community that day at noon PT to discuss her book Red Orchestra and the new film informed by her work Bad Faith.
Look forward to seeing many of you Sunday at our Founder’s Day salon with Keir Giles. Will send out a reminder shortly.
I am glad you are here.
