I hope everyone is enjoying the ‘official’ holiday I created:
National Elastic Waistbands Day.
Lol.🦃🍠🥔🥧🤢
Having just consumed leftover pie, I am enjoying typing comfortably in PJs.
I spent the morning writing my latest Hot Type column for Byline.
Despots don’t get to power without the backing of those who have an ample amount of greed and amorality, and it offers me comfort that history repeatedly illustrates the bad things that eventually happen to those who prop up dictators.
I learn so much from history, and I am incredibly excited about the guests we have booked for December — it’s the story so far, as I will always add to the roster.
Bette members will be sharing our Speakeasy zoom salons with Marci Shore, Nancy MacLean, and our wonderful pool of global experts who join us for our Tuesday Happy Hours. If Paul Niland of Lifeline Ukraine is feeling well enough, we will be seeing him on Tuesday.
Registration: Founder’s Day with Keir Giles
On Sunday, Founding Members get to meet one of my favorite humans — Keir Giles. Like many of my UK friends, he was right about everything. His next book will likely be called “I told you so…”
For those who are not yet Founding Members, here is a recent RadPod interview with Keir:
And here is one of my favorite reports from a previous RadPod visit:
Among his key books:
Our focus on Founder’s Day will be his latest: Who Will Defend Europe?
As always, I ask those who can afford to do so to please support our authors by buying their books. By now, we’ve amassed quite a healthy library of vital tomes for these times.
More on Keir Giles here:
Keir Giles’s new book is “Who Will Defend Europe? An Awakened Russia and a Sleeping Continent”. Ukraine has been the front line of Europe, but following the US Presidential Election, support for Ukraine and defense of Europe is now threatened. Keir Giles has spent his career watching, studying and explaining Russia. Keir’s work has appeared in academic and military publications across Europe and in North America, and he is a regular contributor and commentator on Russian affairs for international print and broadcast media. Keir is the author of multiple publications explaining the Russian approach to warfare, including NATO’s Handbook of Russian Information Warfare (NATO Defense College, 2016); and "Moscow Rules: What Drives Russia to Confront the West" (Brookings/Chatham House, 2019), an examination of the persistent factors causing relations with Russia to fall into crisis. His book "Russia’s War on Everybody: And What it Means for You" (Bloomsbury, 2022), describes the human impact of Russia’s campaigns to acquire power and influence around the world. He is a Senior Consulting Fellow at the UK’s Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), and also works with the Conflict Studies Research Centre (CSRC), a group of deep subject-matter experts on Eurasian security formerly attached to the British Ministry of Defence. He is a regular contributor to research projects on Russian security issues in the US, UK and Europe. His latest book, “Who Will Defend Europe”, is available at Hurst Publishing, and other retail outlets.
Looking forward to seeing many of you Sunday, December 1, at 11 am Pacific. I will be sending out registration links for our Happy Hour and Speakeasy events with Marci Shore and Nancy MacLean in separate posts.
In solidarity, reality, truth, and unity,
Heidi xo
