On Monday I was blue. That’s why I wrote Cherish the Decent.
Learning about the teenage boy who was shot merely by ringing the wrong doorbell broke me. Seeing the radicalized look of the 84-year-old man who shot the teenage boy - twice - I just knew he had been eating a diet of outrage and fear and othering and all the shit the Kremlin and domestic traitors peddle to destroy decency and empathy.
I am glad the victim will recover. I know someone who was shot in the head - she deals with the physical and emotional trauma of it daily.
Ruth Ben-Ghiat was correct when she noted:
“Mass shootings normalize terror and create a traumatized population that views strangers with suspicion and fear.”
So I was momentarily paralyzed from doing this work. I was saved by friends. I took time for self-care time, and rebounded on Tuesday when I learned Americans had been charged with corrupting US elections, spreading Kremlin propaganda, and working on behalf of the Russians to create chaos and destabilization.
I had reported on the story last year, investigated and identified who the Americans were - they were unnamed until yesterday - and I took comfort in being right.
I take comfort in the Justice Department doing its job and indicting traitors and the Russian agents who paid them.
