I was waiting until my latest Hot Type column is published today in Byline before sharing the following words with you — but judging by the broken-hearted messages I’m receiving from the States, I thought it best to dash off a quick consoling note now.
There is no bottom.
Theater craft is being detonated on the people to keep you in despair.
Go to a ribbon store today and make yourself a pin with the colors of the Ukrainian flag — I did.
Show your solidarity and decency, show that you know truth from lies. Repudiate the criminals occupying the White House and the Kremlin.
And recall these words from Marci Shore…
In an interview for my podcast, the author of The Ukrainian Night: An Intimate History of Revolution, said there’s an aphorism in Polish that translates as:
“I found myself at the very bottom, but then I heard knocking from below.”
“I’ve noticed the Russians abbreviate this expression to just ‘knocking from below’ and everyone understands what you mean. You think it couldn’t get any worse and then it does,” she said.
What occurred yesterday in the White House was knocking from below.
But also recall this lesson from Marci on revolution, which she shared on RadPod, as well:
“One of the many things that fascinate me about revolution is that you never really know when you get that mysterious cocktail of elements that will produce a tipping point. You need a critical mass of people at the same time with a clarity about values, willing to cross to the other side of fear at the same time. And then what you really need are people from the security apparatus to defect…
“There's always some mystical moment when it's that one additional person. And what is that cocktail that produces that? That, to some extent, is in the realm of the spontaneous. And think about Romania. Think about, Bucharest — Ceausescu in December 1989. That regime was brutal. They had crushed everybody. And suddenly, there's a rally of support for Ceausescu, and the one guy who starts shouting ‘Boo.’ And just at that moment, the people around him catch on, they cross to the other side of fear, and suddenly, after decades of brutal repression, it's over in the next 20 minutes.”
In solidarity, reality, truth, and unity.
