‘A Sick Man In Time of War’ — And Other Highlights of My Week

“I only wrote this sonata to be rid of the thing, spurred on by my dear publisher. This sonata will be interesting from a documentary point of view and as an example of what may be produced by a sick man in time of war.”
—Claude DeBussy, 1917
As part of my self-care routine, I do one nice thing for myself every time I nail a deadline.
My life is lived in those moments.
A writer’s life is deadlines and more deadlines, self-inflicted and external. Whenever someone tells me they’re thinking about becoming a writer, I tell them to lie down til the feeling passes.
Earning a living with words in a time when information is “free” is nothing short of bananas. Nevertheless, she persisted. In the words of Edith Piaf… Je Ne Regrette Rien
Reflecting back on this week, I wanted to share with you some highlights.
Self care this week included DeBussy at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, as performed by violinist Leila Josefowicz and pianist John Novacek. The dreamy team performed DeBussy’s last complete work — Sonata for Violin and Piano in G minor.
He wrote it a year before his death during World War I — ‘a sick man in time of war’ — and during the entire performance, I was on the edge of my seat. All the feels — all the reminders that this war we are living through is just the passing of greed, yet again.
During intermission, I walked out to the magical garden of the Concert Hall to stare at the night sky. The Downtown LA skyline is filled with tall buildings tagged by bank names. I realized in that moment how daunting it is to fight the greed of men, but it’s not impossible. It’s been done before.
Onward.
Just a quick note to make sure you have the opportunity to review some of the Best of Bette for this week.
