We have so many new members, I do encourage all new members to explore the archives. I am doing the best work of my career on these pages and at Byline Supplement. I do this work as civic duty, but your support means I can do this work as civic duty and keep a roof over my head. My gratitude is enduring.
A couple quick reminders: tomorrow, I will send out the registration link for our ‘Speakeasy’ zoom forum with Czech Republic disinformation researchers happening this Sunday, May 7, at 4 pm. This is an exciting opportunity for our community to meet Alex Alvarova and Josef Holy, hosts of Canaries in the Net podcast. Both grew up under Soviet-era rule and can answer questions about the impacts of lies on the collective psyche and how to steel yourself mentally against propaganda. They will also answer questions about the disinformation networks targeting Eastern Europe, and the overlap of these networks with American traitors.
I am working on bringing international guests to our ‘Speakeasy’ zooms, because I am realizing how much my understanding of this fight of our lifetime is expanding due to the global experts I interview. Yesterday, I had the honor of participating in a Byline Supplement community zoom, and I learn so much from my UK colleagues. We truly are in this together, all of us.
Just a head’s up, geopolitical expert Monique Camarra of the Kremlin File will be zooming in from Italy at our ‘Speakeasy’ on May 21 and you do not want to miss that. She will fill you in on Meloni’s ‘soft fascism’ and offer insights into ties between Italian and American extremists, as well as updates on the Ukraine war.
In my ‘don’t be afraid to say fascism’ files, I urge you to read RadPod guest Jason Stanley’s latest in Guardian, where he explains that ‘Tucker Carlson is not an anti-war populist rebel. He is a fascist’.

I received my copy of the Byline Times print newspaper in the mail this week, and for an old newsie, there is nothing like getting a double truck in the well.
There are so many ways to support independent investigative journalists, who don’t reward leaders of an Insurrection with a town hall, if you catch my drift.
Lastly, our next Bette’s Happy Hour will be Tuesday at noon PT, and as those who attended know, we had a very special guest pop in, Jackie Singh, who is another heroic mother in the fight against fascism. As I listened to her describe the network of online hate terrorists she is exposing, I realized that living with online hate is not freedom, and I believe the work all of us are doing collectively will lead to positive changes.
As Timothy Synder said in The Making of Modern Ukraine, Lecture No. 18:
“The absence of bearings from the past opens the way for mythmakers who focus on the innocence of our in-group… as the only thing which matters from the past.”
It’s time to acknowledge our empathy deficit - as Jim Stewartson so eloquently coined it - and double down on love, kindness, and compassion.
Our world needs it.
