Save the Date! Jeff Sharlet Joins Bette’s ‘Speakeasy’ on Sunday, June 4, 4 pm PT
My birthday gift to you xo
Woke up to a flurry of well wishes, poetry, and donations for my birthday and gee whiz, a girl could get used to this. They came from as far away as Jamaica and France and Ohio and Oregon and Chicago and Puerto Rico! Thank you to everyone who helped me build this community. I feel we are making a collective difference.
My children will tell you that Mother’s Day and my birthday are both days when I would spoil them. I like being a moon reflecting light onto others, and I would shine a light on them and make sure they did something nice for themselves on my celebratory days.
So in that tradition, I have a gift for you:
Professor and author Jeff Sharlet will be our ‘Speakeasy’ zoom forum guest this Sunday, June 4, at 4 pm PT. That’s 7 pm ET lol. We often get folks logging in at the end so take a look at the above, and do the math lol lol.
If you have not yet listened to A RadPod Interview: ‘The Undertow’ with Jeff Sharlet please do so asap. If you are like me - a nerd - you will listen multiple times and take notes to share with others.
As I wrote in Bette’s Weekly Roundup, Sharlet’s latest book, ‘The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War’, is not only vitally important to understanding the fascist threats in America, but it is also one of the most beautifully written books of our time. He opens with a chapter on Harry Belafonte, who understood his voice as a weapon in a long struggle - a struggle that is not yet won. Weaving protest music throughout the book, we end the interview with Jeff reading his favorite passage. Please watch the interview, and join me in crying as he reads the final passage from the book, on camera. Maybe we will ask him to do so again.
Listening to his soulful cadence as he calmly discusses the fascist threats in America, I realize we have a poet in our midst. Someone who can synthesize all the bad and spit out poetry. Another ally in a long struggle.
I am so excited he is joining us and all I ask of this community is that all who can afford to do so, please buy his book to support his very important work. I will be writing a compilation of key quotes from our interview, but in the words of Too Rude, not today, maybe tomorrow.
Okay, looking forward to seeing many of you today at 5 pm, PT, for Bette’s Happy Hour, our weekly wellness meet up.
Bette’s Happy Hour - Happy Birthday to Me! Tuesday, May 30, at 5 pm PT <3
Please join us if you can for Bette’s Happy Hour - Birthday Edition 🥳🎈.
See you in the squares xo
