As I wrote in Bette’s Weekly Roundup, Sharlet’s latest book, ‘The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War’, is not only vitally important to understanding the fascist threats in America, but it is also one of the most beautifully written books of our time. He opens with a chapter on Harry Belafonte, who understood his voice as a weapon in a long struggle - a struggle that is not yet won. Weaving protest music throughout the book, we end the interview with Jeff reading his favorite passage.

Listening to his soulful cadence as he calmly discusses the fascist threats in America, I realize we have a poet in our midst. Someone who can synthesize all the bad and spit out poetry. Another ally in a long struggle.
