Calendaring Bette — Upcoming Events with Jack Bryan, Paul Conroy, and More Marty Please
Mark your calendars for our upcoming Happy Hour, Speakeasy, and Founder’s Day with brave reporters of our time
***Events are for paid members. Thank you to everyone who has upgraded their memberships to support my work. I am so happy we are growing the flock.***
A heartfelt thank you to all the new Bette Dangerous members, and to everyone who has upgraded to Founding Member. Thank you to everyone who supports me as a I do this work.
We recently topped 2,000 subscribers, and are nearing 500 paid members. I run specials often because I know you have many writers to support, and I am very grateful to being among them.
Today, Bandy Lee wrote:
I.F. Stone is known for his mantra of what makes a good journalist:
“A good journalist is someone who comforts the afflicted, and afflicts the comfortable.”
Indeed, Izzy, as he was endearingly known, upheld over his long career spanning seven decades, and at times suffered considerably because of, his principles.
It’s safe to say, all of us on the frontlines of the information war have suffered because of our principles.
Thanks to all of you, I can keep writing in defense of truth with the comfort of knowing there are still principled people who support the truth-tellers, as I comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. To wit…
Which brings us to our main event, the calendaring of Bette. We have fantastic guests coming up and as always, we benefit from having community — a safe space to be seen and heard.
Bette’s Happy Hour, Tuesday, Oct. 24, 12 pm PT — featuring Martin Sheil. The Happy Hours are a weekly wellness session for global newsies that alternate between noon and 5 pm PT each Tuesday. We have been inviting Bette member Martin Sheil to help us navigate the main events in Trumplandia, and I’ve already invited him to pop in for a few minutes Tuesday to update what our friend J.Rance has dubbed “The Flippening.”
Bette’s Speakeasy Zoom Salon, Sunday, Oct. 29, 4 pm — featuring Jack Bryan, director of Active Measures, American Psyop, and the new podcast series Lawyers, Guns, and Money — produced by Jack and Jon Cryer, who narrates the series. Here is a summary:
When Miami public defender John Mattes met his first felony defendant in 1985, what he heard pulled him into a world of danger and intrigue that would change the course of American history. His client, a Cuban American, had been arrested for having a machine gun as part of what he claimed was a CIA gun-running operation. After collecting a ragtag group of witnesses, including drug-running and mercenaries Mattes connects with a young Senator as they follow a trail that leads directly to the White House. Hosted by Jon Cyer. Produced by Jon Cryer and Jack Bryan.
Jack is known for his brave and edgy work, and if you haven’t already watched Active Measures or it’s been a minute, I highly recommend.
Next up…
Bette’s Founder’s Day, November 5, 1:30 pm — featuring Paul Conroy, a British independent war correspondent, filmmaker, and author currently working in Ukraine. Founding members had a chance to meet author and war correspondent Zarina Zabrisky last week, who is currently working on a new film with Conroy — both teamed up on the film, Under Deadly Skies/Ukraine’s Eastern Front, a Byline Film production. I was honored to co-host the US premiere with Zabrisky in June, and the film documents the myriad war crimes by Russia against the Ukrainian people.
A former soldier with the Royal Artillery, Conroy is a veteran of 19 wars, and he wrote a book about his experience in Syria, where he was injured covering events from the Syrian city of Homs after the building he was staying in with other journalists was targeted. Among the reporters killed was foreign correspondent Marie Colvin and French photojournalist Remi Ochlik.
Below are two beautiful photo essays featuring Conroy’s work:
Conroy just launched a substack and you can follow him here:
