“We’ve now entered into — I’ve heard it called the post-truth age — I would just call it a nihilistic moment in American history to be sure, also probably international history, where you don’t have to hide the worst of yourself. All of your venality, your vindictiveness, your murderous rage, all the things you would try to cover up if for instance you were the Soviet Union — ‘there’s no famine. Our gulags are models of re-education and rehabilitation’ — all these things you once spent a great deal of energy trying to obfuscate. Now you don’t do that anymore. You lean into ‘yeah, I’m a piece of shit. I want to go out and kill people with AR-15s, for ‘teh lulz’ cuz it’s funny. I own the libs by doing that.’ The salesmanship is all negative, there’s no positive.”

I have often said on these pages that what we are really fighting is a war on empathy. I am certain I am not alone in observing that something has gone wildly wrong in the US when nihilism has been normalized, and when the cruelty is the point.

I am a big believer in finding simple solutions to complex problems, and we start by admitting the problems — by looking them right in the face and demanding our better angels prevail.

Although I ask you to watch the entire hour of our interview with Michael Weiss, I asked HiFi to put together some of Weiss’ most important soundbites. One of my new mantras, which you will hear Michael say is ‘nothing new under the sun…’ Oddly, I find that comforting.
